About Wiersberg Warriors
Who We Are
Wiersberg Warriors was established in February 2019 by the family and friends of Officer Spencer Wiersberg. The formation was in response to Spencer's diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer typically diagnosed during childhood.
Spencer started having pain in his hip area in early February 2019. Initially he believed that it was a pulled muscle or tendon, however it progressed quickly to debilitating pain, fever and rapid heart rate. He was initially admitted to a local hospital and then transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. He was finally diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma which is typically a childhood cancer. He started treatment in the division of pediatric oncology. His treatment was scheduled to last close to a year and included chemotherapy and radiation.
The community response to support Spencer in his time of need was phenomenal. Private individuals as well as community groups organized numerous fundraiser and benefits for him to help cover the expenses associated with his illness as well as his inability to work. His employer, Fruitland Police Department stood behind him the entire time.
Spencer initially responded favorably to treatment and it seemed that he would be cancer free in order to receive a much needed stem cell transplant from his sister, Samantha. Unfortunately, Ewing Sarcoma is relentless and Spencer relapsed soon after ending treatment. His body did not respond to the available treatments after that and to our everlasting sorrow, his End of Watch was January 12, 2020.
Our mission now is to honor Spencer's memory, raise awareness about Ewing Sarcoma, and give back to our community that continues to support us.
It's Official!
Wiersberg Warriors Foundation officially became a 501(c)3 nonprofit in July 2022, right before Spencer's 26th birthday. We are currently working on fundraising and will post updates here and on our Facebook page..
